Hyperpigmentation refers to brown spots in the skin caused by sun exposure, acne, scarring, laser, chemical peels, and birth control pills. These brown spots are really small pieces of melanin which must be physically removed. It is done primarily with hydroquinone which breaks up the melanin into small pieces so it can rise to the surface of the skin and be sloughed off.
